So, you've decided that this year you're really going to make those resolutions stick - great! Well, it's the 3rd day of the new year - how are you doing so far? If you're anything like me - you might already be tempted to let things slide a little... Well, here are three of my best tips to help keep you on track to your most successful resolutions ever.
Tip #1: Make sure your resolution fits you.
Many well-intending folks set goals toward something they feel they "should" do or want. Let's be honest, unless it's actually something you WANT to do/accomplish, it's not going to happen. Is it meaningful to you? Before you sign up for your office "Biggest Loser" competition, or tell your best friend that you'll train for a marathon with them, check in with yourself. What would feel the best for YOU to achieve this year? What would make YOU feel proud?
Tip #2 Create a game plan.
Okay, so now that you are clear on what you want to do - HOW are you going to do it? Be specific and be realistic. Start from where you are right now and build slowly toward your goal. Set action-based goals, as opposed to result-based, for each step (i.e. "I'm going to walk for 30 minutes every day" instead of "I'm going to lose 2 lbs per week"). Use phone apps or spreadsheets or even just a simple notebook or journal to track your progress. It's easy to lose track when you don't keep track. Being able to see your improvement over time can help keep you motivated when your initial burst of excitement inevitably dies down.
Tip #3 Get (good) support.
This can be a tricky one (see tip #1). You have to have the right kind of support if it's going to be effective. If you're looking for accountability, it is really helpful to have someone on your side who is on the same page. Joining an online group, a class or team can help keep you going - with like-minded folks. Another option is to talk about it with someone else - even if they aren't signing on as an accountability partner, per se. Talking about our goals makes them more real! This role can also be filled with a healthcare professional - like your doctor, acupuncturist, therapist, or -ahem- health coach (just sayin'). These people are in a helping field for a reason. Don't be afraid to reach out.
Cheers to you all - here's to a happy and healthy 2017!
